      5. Does your driveway have Japanese Knotweed?

Japanese knotweed has been plaguing properties in the UK for years and here in Yorkshire and the North of England it is a problem for many. Japanese knotweed is a rapidly growing weed, it does die off during the colder winter months to ground level, but by the time summer comes around again its recognisable bamboo style stems emerge when can in some cases be over 3m tall. It’s a troublesome weed that can be near on impossible to remove by hand.

First introduced to UK shores in the early 1840s as an ornamental plant but it now thrives across parks, canal walkways, railway lines and in residential gardens and driveways, causing a lot of damage. Asphalt, patio and block paving won’t keep Japanese knotweed at bay.

The Enviroment Agency describe the invasive weed as “indisputably the UK’s most aggressive, destructive plant” The plant is known to cause real damage to property and driveways by breaking in mortar, brickworks, tarmac, joints in concrete, drains and sewers.

It is now a fact that according to official records states that there is not a single six mile square patch that it is not present in the UK. (Orkney Islands excluded)

      The legal stance

Since 2013, as a seller of a property you have to state if Japanese knotweed is present within the boundaries of your property. If you have an issue with Japanese Knotweed then you will need to provide an eradication plan from a professional company. If you are the potential buyer of a property then it can be hard to get a mortgage on the property, they will seek assurances.

It isn’t illegal to have Japanese knotweed in your property but you should be controlling the invasive weed, it can approve to be very persistent.
